Memory cards at On Off Digital World

The team at On Off Digital World likes to say that removable memory cards are the smallest and most important accessory for any portable media device, from smart phones to digital cameras and beyond. Though memory cards are not as glamorous as smart phones and digital cameras, On Off Digital World associates note that these devices would be useless without the storage space conferred on them by removable memory cards. Memory cards come in various shapes, adds On Off Digital World, but they are all basically small chips of flash memory that store data and media.

On Off Digital World explains that memory cards can be moved from one device to another to simplify data exchanges. For example, notes On Off Digital World, most new net books have memory card slots to make moving photos from the camera to a computer or website a cinch. Because of the prevalence of digital media capture devices like cameras and video cameras, says On Off Digital world, memory cards in recent years have higher capacities than ever.

On Off Digital World describes the major types of removable memory cards: SDHC, micro SDHC and Memory Stick. The Memory Stick, explains On Off Digital World, is a proprietary Sony product designed to optimize Sony digital media products like the Handycam. On Off Digital World says that SDHC and micro SDHC cards are two common designs that are manufactured by many companies, including Kensington, PNY, and SanDisk. On Off Digital World explains that SDHC stands for “Secure Digital High Capacity.” An SDHC card, continues On Off Digital world is about the size of a postage stamp. Micro SDHC memory cards are the same idea as SDHC cards, says On Off Digital World, but they are instead the size of a fingernail.

All three types of memory card, adds On Off Digital World are typically available in a selection of 4, 8, 16, and eventually even 32 GB capacities. On Off Digital World reports that surprising amounts of media can be stored on these remarkable little pieces of technology.
